It all began with doodling…

Katharine Ligon is an emerging artist in Houston, TX.

Katharine is a native Houstonian and has lived there for the majority of her life. Beginning in high school, Katharine created doodle drawings for family and friends, which continued to her various workplaces where she would surprise coworkers with small doodles on notes on their desks. The doodling progressed to dabbling in painting as a way to relax while working in social services and even more so while working in the Texas Legislature. However, recently Katharine has become more focused on expanding her own artistic vision as well as working on the weekends as an art agent for Taft McWhorter Art.

Katharine’s art draws on her prior professional experiences. She has a Master of Social Work from the University of Houston and has extensive experience serving communities through child welfare services, advocacy, and legislative strategy. She has done this all in an effort to promote and protect the well-being of those who are oppressed and vulnerable. She worked for five years with children in foster care and then transitioned to working around the Texas Capitol for eight years as a staffer and advocate, working on public policy issues related to physical and mental health, substance abuse, and criminal justice. The cornerstone of each of these experiences was building and fostering relationships. Katharine enjoys connecting with people in person and through her art and seeks to blend her loves of advocacy and art in the near future.

Katharine is a visual artist. Her work is mostly contemporary abstract using acrylic paints and various mediums on canvas and wood panels. A fundamental principle in the practice of social work is to meet people where they are. In art, Katharine seeks to encourage each viewer to feel and respond to the work based their own experience and interpretation, meeting them where they are at for this moment in time.
